Pedestrian Killed by Box Truck While Crossing Street in Austin, Texas

On a Friday in late September 2022, around 11 p.m., officers with the Austin Police Department responded to a crash between a Penske yellow box truck and a 72-year-old pedestrian. The collision happened at the intersection of South Congress Avenue and Industrial Boulevard, in South Austin, Texas.

The Austin Police Department’s preliminary investigation indicated that the pedestrian was crossing the road when the yellow box truck was traveling on South Congress Avenue, in the northbound inside lane, when it struck the pedestrian.

Paramedics were called to help the pedestrian, who sadly died at the scene. The driver of the Penske yellow box truck remained at the scene and cooperated with the officers’ investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, but officers have released a statement that there were no indications of impairment and that no arrests have been made.

This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 79th fatal crash of 2022, resulting in 81 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2021, there were 87 fatal crashes resulting in 94 deaths, according to APD.
