United Airlines Sued after Employee runs over Woman’s Foot

On July 21, 2022, a Harris County resident, and TSA employee (“woman”), filed a complaint in the Harris County District Court against defendants United Airlines Inc. (“United”) and Jane Doe (“United employee”) for injuries she sustained after the United employee ran over her foot with a motorized cart at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (“Incident”). The woman has asserted causes of action for negligence and gross negligence against the United employee and causes of action for negligence, negligent entrustment, negligent hiring, supervision, training and retention, respondeat superior, and gross negligence against United.

On June 18, 2022, according to her petition, the woman, a Transportation Security Officer (TSO) with the Transportation Security Agency (TSA), was walking toward the breakroom at George Bush Intercontinental Airport when the Incident occurred. The woman claims the United employee forced her way through a crowded area while operating a United motorized cart and subsequently ran over the woman’s right foot. The woman claims the United employee provided no notice or warning prior to the Incident. As a result of the Incident, the woman claims she suffered serious injuries to her foot and ankle, loss of mobility, and mental anguish, among other injuries that have prevented her from returning to work.

The woman claims the United employee was negligent in failing to safely operate the motorized cart, failing to give any warning, and in failing to exercise caution and maintain awareness of her surroundings while operating the motorized cart. The woman further claims United was negligent in failing to properly train the United employee on the safe use of the motorized cart and in failing to adopt safety policies for the use of motorized carts.

The woman is seeking compensation for her past and future medical expenses; past and future physical impairment; past and future pain, suffering, and mental anguish; and past and future physical disfigurement, among other damages. The woman is seeking monetary relief in the amount of over $1,000,000.
