Issues with transmission components have caused Ford to issue a recall alert for more than 2.9 million vehicles.

The company indicated the recall was due to issues with the bushing that connects the shift cable to the transmission. This complication causes vehicles not to go into the intended gear and gives no warning message or chime to the driver. Even if vehicles are placed in park, the issue could cause vehicles to move in unintended directions.

Ford said it received 1,630 warranty reports and was aware of four injury reports and six property damage reports potentially related to the bushing defect. At least 233 vehicle owner questionnaires have also been received by Ford in connection with this concern. Affected models include Ford Escape 2013 to 2019, Ford Fusion 2013 to 2016, Ford C-Max 2013 to 2018, Ford Transit Connect 2013 to 2021, and Ford Edge 2015 to 2018.

This bushing issue has been the subject of four other recalls by Ford in the past. Ford’s solution is to replace the bushing using a different grade material and add a protective cap. While the root cause of the recalls remains unknown, Ford noted that heat and humidity could be contributing factors.
