Bestar of Canada issued a nationwide recall of over 129,000 wall beds following reports of severe crush risks, including at least one reported death.  The recalled wall beds were sold at Costco, Amazon, Wayfair, and Cymax.

The wall beds, featured primarily for storage, can detach from the wall and fall onto those nearby, posing serious impact and crushing hazards, according to the recall notice from the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC). There have been reports of over 60 incidents resulting in bruising and other injuries from the wall beds detaching and hitting consumers, including at least one death from the severe crush impact. In July 2018, a 79-year-old woman died after a wall-bed subject to the recall fell on top of her and fatally injured her, according to the CPSC Notice.

This recall involves a variety of different styles of full and queen beds. The beds, also known as Murphy beds or pull-down beds, were sold between June 2014 and March 2022.  The beds cost between $1,650 and $2,200. Consumers have been advised to immediately stop using the recalled wall beds and consult with the manufacturer, Bestar of Canada.

Bestar of Canada is also supposed to be contacting all known consumers directly. If a consumer is uncertain whether their wall bed needs to be reinstalled – they are entitled to a free inspection. If the bed requires reinstallation, consumers are advised to use a professional installer. The manufacturer will reimburse consumers for any reinstallation cost.
