Baby Formula Recalled Due to Potentially Dangerous Infection

Since February 17, 2022, Abbot Nutrition has been recalling its baby formula. Recently, the recall was expanded to include Similac PM 60/40. The current recall follows the recall of certain lots of Similac, Alimentum, and Elecare powder formula that were recalled last month due to possible contamination from Cronobacter. The recall was due to certain parts of the plant testing positive for Cronobacter pathogen at the company’s manufacturing facility.

According to reports, a child has died of Cronobacter after being exposed to infant formula produced at Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis, Michigan facility. Similacrecall.com is reporting that the FDA and Abbott are currently still investigating. The additional affected lot numbers are 27032K80 and 27032K800. However, the manufacturer is denying the pathogen was in contact with the product.

In a statement issued on similacrecall.com, the manufacturer states that every completed batch of baby formula is tested for Cronobacter. Concerned parents can check the lot numbers on similacrecall.com or by calling 1-800-986-8540 to determine if they purchased formula from a recalled batch.  Per the Centers for Disease Control website, if the first two digits are 22 through 37 and use by date is after April 1, 2022, then the formula should be returned. The manufacturer has stated that only products from their Sturgis, Michigan facility are affected by the recall.

The Centers for Disease Control website states that Cronobacter is a germ that can live in dry places for an extended period of time. Although the illness is rare, it can be fatal to small children or immunocompromised individuals.
