Texas Jury Awards Family $730 Million in Wrongful Death Lawsuit

An East Texas family was recently awarded $730 million in a wrongful death lawsuit at the conclusion of their jury trial. The lawsuit involved a 73-year-old great-grandmother from East Texas who was killed in February of 2016 on Highway 271 in a wreck with an 18-wheeler that was hauling a propeller for a Navy submarine.

The great-grandmother was driving between two church services when the 18-wheeler’s lead escort vehicle ran her off of the road, eventually leading to the wide load striking her vehicle and causing an explosion of debris, killing the 73-year-old as a result. At trial, attorneys for the deceased woman’s family presented evidence to the jury and argued that the woman’s death resulted from failures by multiple companies in following Texas laws while loading the 200,000-pound “Super-Load” (the propeller) onto the 18-wheeler and subsequently operating the vehicle.

The jury ultimately awarded the family $480 million and an additional $250 million in punitive damages.
