Texas Jury Awards $301B Against Corpus Christi Bar

A Texas jury has awarded $301 billion dollars to a family who lost two loved ones after a drunk driver ran a red light at 91 mph, causing the crash. This verdict marks the largest personal injury award in US history.

The lawsuit was brought by the family of a woman and her 16-year-old granddaughter who were on their way home after the 16-year-old’s shift at Cici’s Pizza on November 12, 2017.

Authorities confirmed that the negligent driver left the sports bar with a .263 blood alcohol concentration. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the legal intoxication limit in Texas is .08.

A spokesperson for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission articulated the significance of this verdict illustrating the consequences of selling alcohol to a person who has already had too much. “Texas law requires alcohol retailers to cut off customers who show signs of intoxication. Those who violate the law could face financial and legal consequences of their actions contribute to the loss of life.”

The US Department of Transportation states that 28 people across the county die in drunk driving accidents every day, amounting to one death every 52 minutes.
