Westlake Chemical Petro Complex 2 Explosion

On September 27, 2021, an explosion occurred at Westlake Chemical’s Petro Complex 2 Unit in Sulphur, Louisiana.

The explosion occurred around 11 p.m. Monday, September 27, 2021, at Westlake’s Petro 2 Plant on La. 108. Residents of the area reported plumes of smoke drifting into the sky after the explosion was visible from miles away. Several people reported hearing the explosion from miles away. Six workers were reportedly injured with one sustaining severe burns to half of his body.

The spokesman for Louisiana State Police announced, “Anything at a chemical plant would be a big deal whether it’s an explosion, a chemical release, a fire, or anything like that,” Senegal said. “Of course, if there are people involved with that, we don’t want to have any type of loss of life or impact on site that will affect residents.”
