Drunk Drivers Cause About a Third of Traffic Fatalities

In 2016, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) report found that 28 percent of all traffic accident fatalities involved drunk drivers. In Texas, this number sat even higher at 38 percent. The same report found that over 25 percent of motorcyclists killed in motor accidents had a BAC level of .08 or greater. Further, drugs other than alcohol were involved in about 16 percent of accidents nationwide.

While the overall alcohol-impaired driving fatality rate has declined by about 23 percent in the past 10 years, over 100 million American adults are estimated to drive under the influence every year. Drinking has long been known to impair judgment and coordination, slow reaction times, and disturb vision.  All of this is a recipe for disaster on the road that causes over 10,000 deaths a year.

In addition to the death toll, drunk and impaired drivers cause over $44 billion each year in damage and wreak havoc for countless families around the country. The verdict is clear: there is never an excuse to get behind the wheel under the influence.
