Daytime is still dangerous for motorcyclists

It was the middle of the day on Saturday, August 7, 2021, and a Houston motorcyclist was enjoying a weekend cruise. Meanwhile, 35-year-old Christopher Lawrence Baulch had been drinking and was out driving in the Pasadena area. Around 3:55 p.m. at the intersection of South Shaver Street and Wald Street in Baulch and the rider had a fatal encounter.

According to authorities, the motorcyclist was driving eastbound on Shaver when Baulch in a black Kia Soul left a stop sign and turned left to head westbound on Shaver. Baulch wasn’t paying attention and crossed all the lanes of traffic as the motorcycle driver was approaching the intersection. The motorcyclist couldn’t avoid the sudden appearance of Baulch’s car and crashed into the Kia according to the police.

The motorcyclist was violently flung from his bike in the crash. EMS transported him to a nearby hospital but due to the severity of the crash, he later died. Police determined that Baulch was driving impaired, and he was charged with driving while intoxicated in connection with the crash. Despite the death of the motorcyclist and the accident occurring in broad daylight Baulch has still not been charged with anything other than the DWI.

This crash is a small example of the real hazards faced by Houston motorcyclists and the real consequences of the inattention of other drivers on the road.
