Ride-Sharing Injury Claims: Insurance Requirements for Uber and Lyft Car Wrecks Depends, in Part, on the Status of the Driver

If you are in a motor vehicle accident involving an Uber or Lyft driver, it can be challenging to figure out who is responsible for paying your medical bills and other personal injury or property damages.

Drivers and passengers are protected in Texas via insurance requirements that help ensure that ride-sharing drivers working for companies like Uber and Lyft maintain insurance coverage that may help compensate you if you are injured in a motor vehicle accident either while a passenger of an Uber of Lyft driver or when hit by an Uber or Lyft driver. The required amount of insurance coverage in Texas is determined, in part, by the status of the ride-sharing driver at the time of the collision.

When the Driver Is Logged Into the Ride-Sharing App But Not Yet Matched With a Passenger:

Texas generally requires that ride-sharing drivers maintain at least the following insurance coverage in the event the ride-sharing driver is logged into the ride-sharing app but has not yet matched with a prospective passenger:

· $50,000 per person;

· $100,000 bodily injury coverage per accident; and

· $25,0000 property damage coverage per accident

When the Driver Matches With a Passenger:

When the ride-sharing driver matches with a passenger and is involved in a collision either on their way to pick the passenger up or while the passenger is in the vehicle, there may be $1 million in coverage.
