Lawsuit Filed Against U.S. Figure Skating Coach Richard Callaghan for Sexual Abuse

A lawsuit was filed recently accusing long time U.S. Figure Skating Coach Richard Callaghan of sexual abuse and alleging that U.S. Figure Skating did nothing to stop it. The lawsuit was filed by Craig Maurizi, a figure skating coach and former student of Callaghan. The suit alleges that the inappropriate and illegal sexual relationship began when Maurizi was a minor, and that Callaghan continued to exploit Maurizi on and off for years. The allegations were first brought to light by Maurizi in an interview with the New York Times in 1999.

Callaghan was barred from figure skating permanently in 2019 but has since gotten his ban reduced to three years. Following his ban, other former students of Callaghan have come forward alleging he sexually abused them in the 90s and early 2000s. In 2019, Adam Schmidt came forward and became the fourth former student of Callaghan to accuse him of sexual misconduct.
