Ikea Sued for Product Recall Response

A lawsuit seeking class action certification was filed against the popular furniture company, Ikea. The lawsuit alleges Ikea failed to take the proper steps to remove its previously recalled dressers from the homes of consumers.

In 2016, Ikea issued a product recall when it acknowledged the subject dressers did not meet industry standards for stability testing. This type of testing ensures that a dresser will remain upright when it is pulled on by a child. Recently, Ikea agreed to pay approximately $46 million to a couple who said they were unaware the dresser in their son's room had been recalled. The child died when the dresser tipped on him.

The new lawsuit focuses on Ikea's actions after the recall and accuses Ikea of ineffectively handling the dresser recall. Amongst other allegations, the lawsuit states Ikea failed to contact consumers who purchased the dressers and provided customers with store credit rather than the refunds that were originally promised. The lawyer responsible for filing the recent lawsuit claims Ikea has turned away consumers wanting to return the recalled dressers for various reasons. These reasons allegedly range from the dressers being painted to consumers attempting to return more than one dresser. The plaintiffs contend Ikea appeared to make a corporate decision to limit consumers ability to return the dressers for a refund.
