Verizon to Pay $125,000,000 to the Family of a New Jersey Woman Who was Crushed and Paralyzed by a Telephone Pole

On the morning of January 27, 2017, Marie Moser Meister was waiting for the bus as she did every day when she was crushed by a telephone pole. The telephone pole in question had rotted through, snapped at its base, fallen over, and landed on an unsuspecting Mrs. Meister. She suffered multiple spinal and rib fractures as well as severe paralysis throughout her body. Mrs. Meister also suffered brain injuries and vision problems in both eyes.

Mrs. Meister’s family initially brought suit against the responsible utility company, Altice USA, but Verizon ultimately took responsibility for the incident. Public Service Enterprise Group (“PSEG’) and Verizon co-owned the telephone pole pursuant to a contract between the two. In the end, the parties settled the case out of court. Verizon will pay $125,000,000 to the Meisters, while Altice USA will pay $250,000, and PSEG will pay $25,000.
