Drunk Drivers Arrested in Deadly Hit-and-Run Crashes

Unfortunately for Texas, 2020 has already proven to be no different with drunk drivers continuing to cause accidents, injuries, and deaths.

On January 25, a Richmond man riding his motorcycle was killed by an alleged drunk driver in a head-on collision that resulted in the death of the motorcycle rider. According to a preliminary investigation by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, a 51-year-old man was driving northwest on Pitts Road when his 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe crossed over into the southbound lane and collided into a 2008 Harley Davidson Motorcycle. The victim was transported by Fort Bend EMS to Oak Bend Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

In March, a man pushing a bike across the street was struck by a pickup truck. The constable's office says the driver did not stop, but was later found hiding inside the bathroom of a gas station. A field sobriety test was administered and results are pending for a blood draw that was taken at a hospital. The constable's office says the driver displayed several signs of intoxication. Harris County District Attorney's Office Vehicular Crimes Division, will charge the driver with driving while intoxicated with a child passenger and failure to stop and render aid resulting in death. The driver could face additional charges once the investigation is complete.

According to TxDOT, in 2018 Harris County experienced 121 deaths caused by drunk drivers and 3,186 alcohol-involved crashes. That number continues to rise every year. Driving under the influence of alcohol not only risks death or serious injuries, but it can also have a devastating effect on the people and families involved.
