Lawsuit Filed on Behalf of Handicapped Minor Alleging Sexual Abuse and Rape

On March 3, 2020 a lawsuit was filed on behalf of a 14-year-old girl with developmental disabilities alleging that she was sexually abused and raped over the course of several consecutive days on her school bus. This tragic event occurred approximately one year ago in Fulton County, Georgia where it is alleged that she was subjected to sexual abuse and rape only three to four rows behind the driver of a small special-needs school bus. According to the lawsuit, the girl underwent several days of repeated abuse before the driver reportedly “noticed something” occurring on the bus.

According to the family of the young victim, the girl has neurodevelopmental disabilities and functions at a level far below her actual age. Because of these disabilities, the girl was unable to effectively communicate and interact with other individuals and protect herself against her assailants, which were two young boys with special needs. The sexual abuse and rape allegations included in the lawsuit stated that the young girl was groped, her clothing was removed, she was exposed to male genitalia, and forced to perform oral sex on one of the assailants. This is not the first time that Fulton County School District has come under fire for complaints against their bus drivers. Just four months before this incident, another bus driver in the district lost his job after leaving a student stranded on a bus instead of dropping her off at school.

Fulton County School District has issued a public statement regarding the allegations, calling them “extremely serious and concerning.” After learning about what was reported to them, the school district immediately separated the bus driver from the students, prevented the bus driver from continuing his work duties, and immediately began investigating the claims alleged in the lawsuit. In the meantime, the girl’s attorney requested all video and recording systems that were in place on the bus where the incident occurred, which the school district has refused to produce at this time.
