11 Defensive Driving Tips For Surviving Houston's Roadways

Houston roads are some of the most dangerous in the country. It is important to follow traffic laws, but obviously not everyone on the road does so.

What can you do to safeguard yourself, your passengers, and your vehicle from dangerous drivers?

One idea is to practice driving defensively. Below are tips to help you prevent accidents.

11 Defensive Driving Tips:

  • Leave your emotions in the driveway. Focus on the road and drive with dispassion. You must clear your mind of any emotional distractions.
  • Obey the speed limit. The posted speed limits are not suggestions.
  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or prescription drugs.
  • Wear your seatbelt.
  • Be aware of the possibility of a second collision. It is quite common for another collision to occur after the first. Move to safety after an accident.
  • Constantly scan the roadway. Anticipating and spotting potential hazards is half the battle.
  • Use the two-second follow rule. Never ride another car's bumper. If they stop and you are following too closely, it's often too late. Give yourself a comfortable cushion between your vehicle and that car in front of you.
  • Know your vehicle's brakes. How much time does it take for your vehicle to stop?
  • Be extra cautious in inclement weather conditions. Weather often plays a role in accidents. You should drive for the conditions. If the roadway is wet, slow down.
  • Share the road. Vehicles of all sizes operate on the roadways. Be particularly aware of motorcyclists.
  • Allow extra room and distance when passing another vehicle.

For more extensive information, consider taking a state-approved defensive driving course. In most cases, you can get a discount on your car insurance if you successfully complete the course. More importantly, the information may save your life-or someone else's.
