Boeing has begun to settle the claims of families whose loved ones were killed in a Boeing 737 MAX crash which occurred on October 29, 2018, in the Java Sea. The crash occurred shortly after taking off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, all 189 of the passengers and crew died.

One lawyer has stated that he has settled 11 of his 17 death cases against Boeing on behalf of the surviving families. There are reportedly 55 lawsuits filed against Boeing arising out of the deadly crash and these are the first ones reported to have settled. While the lawyer stated that he could not disclose the specific amounts of the settlements due to a confidentiality agreement with Boeing, there are anonymous reports that the claims for a single victim without any dependents are settling for at least $1.2M each.

Boeing is also facing nearly 100 lawsuits over an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX crash that occurred on March 10, 2019 that killed 157 people.
