Are Electric Scooters Safe?

Electric scooters sailed onto the Texas traffic scene last summer amid wary news coverage of the latest phase of what is now called "micromobility." Immediately popular with the public, especially the 18 to 29-year-old crowd, these scooters are legal on city roads with a speed limit under 35 miles per hour.

According to a study by the Austin Public Health department, there are fewer scooter-related accidents than you would think, but the injuries tend to be serious.

Austin Public Health Study Findings

Over a three-month period in fall of 2018, there were about 270 injuries caused by an accident that was somehow related to an electric scooter. Additionally, more than half of electric scooter riders involved in an accident sustained a serious injury, including but not limited to:

  • Bone fractures
  • Nerve, tendon or ligament injuries
  • Severe bleeding
  • Organ damage

This is nowhere near the amount of injuries caused by car or even bicycle accidents. However, as these scooters become more common, so will scooter-related injuries and accidents.

Are Motorists Aware Of Scooter Riders?

Just as motorists fail to see pedestrians, bicyclists, and even people crossing the street, they also fail to see scooter riders.

When motorists talk on their phones or text while driving, or engage in other distracted driving practices, scooter riders are at risk. And unfortunately, the risk in Houston is extremely high. Houston is considered the most distracted city in the U.S.

As e-scooters become more and more popular in Houston - for leisure, transportation and even commuting purposes - we expect to see more accidents and injuries resulting. When an accident occurs, it is important for victims to be aware of their legal rights and protections.
