$100M Trial Against Security Company for Wrongful Death Caused by Armored Truck Settles During Jury Deliberations

In January 2018, an armored truck driver in Arlington, Texas, made an unexpected left-hand turn, hitting and killing a motorcyclist. The motorcyclist’s family filed a lawsuit against the security company that employed the driver, arguing that the company had a history of failing to adequately vet, train, and supervise its drivers.

During the September 2019 trial, the family’s lawyers introduced evidence that the company did not require its drivers to undergo any training, and that the driver who caused the accident had a record of traffic violations which should have disqualified him from driving the vehicle. When the driver who caused the incident was asked about a speeding ticket he received after his first shift with the company, he reportedly responded, under oath, “that’s just how I drive.”

The family’s lawyers asked the jury to award $100 million in damages, and the lawsuit settled shortly after jury deliberations began.
