Texas Jury Awards $37 Million Verdict Against Honda After 27-Year-Old Woman Paralyzed in Crash

A jury in Dallas returned a $37.6 million verdict against Honda in February 2019 after a nine-day trial. The trial surrounded 27-year-old Sarah Millburn, who was left quadriplegic with only minimal use of her arms and hands after an accident in 2015. The crash occurred when Sarah was riding as an Uber passenger in a 2011 Honda Odyssey minivan that was T-boned by a pickup truck.

Sarah sued Honda, alleging that the 2011 Odyssey had a defect in its third-row middle seatbelt. As one of Sarah's attorneys stated, "Sarah put the seat belt on the same way 50 out of 53 people in our studies did, and wearing it that way was actually more dangerous than having no seat belt at all."

A spokesman for American Honda Motor Co. said that the company is disappointed with the verdict and intends to appeal.
