GM Recall - When Conveniences Become Catastrophes

Photo of Brant Stogner

When GM installed engine block heaters in some of their trucks, they did not foresee the potential increased fire hazards as a result of this intended convenience. The engine block heaters were designed to warm the engine to allow for easier starting in very cold weather. This is allowed by plugging the engine block heaters into an external power outlet. However, recent reports have shown that the cord and block heater may short circuit resulting in a potential fire.

Models that have been recalled include 2017 to 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty trucks, and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty trucks. Also included in the recall are 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 4500, 5500, and 6500 commercial trucks. According to the NHTSA, the trucks mainly affected are equipped with 6.6 Duramax diesel engines and optional engine block heaters. Given the recent changes in extreme weather patterns, more drivers have had to adapt to harsh cold weather and the troubles they bring.

Pickup truck sales statistics in the U.S. show that they are accountable for 18% of total vehicle sales. When compared to the total amount of vehicles on the road in the U.S. which is 253 million, there is a staggering amount of potential error for many trucks on the road. According to an interview between Consumer Reports and General Motors, there have been 19 fires reported but fortunately no injuries, fatalities, or crashes.
