Driving in Houston can be hectic and dangerous between long commute times, traffic congestion and distracted drivers. But traffic in Houston doesn't just affect drivers: pedestrians must be on alert when crossing intersections and biking, running or walking near traffic.
When it comes to pedestrian safety, certain intersections are more problematic than others.
Link Houston recently published a report that named the 10 most dangerous intersections throughout the city for pedestrians. They are:
10: Bellaire & South Gessner in Sharpstown
9: West & Airline in Greater Greenspoint
8: Bissonnet & Wilcrest in Alief
7: Fondren & West Bellfort in Greater Fondren Southwest
6: Old Spanish Trail & 288 South in AstroDome Area
5: Westpark Drive & US 59 South in Gulfton/Mid-West/Sharpstown
4: Long Point & Gessner in Spring Branch West
3: Westheimer & S. Dairy Ashford in Eldridge West Oaks/Briar Forest
2: Ranchester & Bellaire in Sharpstown
1: Fannin & Pierce in Downtown (near Midtown)
57,610 intersection points in Houston were considered in the report.
Pedestrian accidents are a huge problem in Harris County. There were 12,707 pedestrian accidents between 2013 and 2017, which is equivalent to about seven accidents per day. A total of 618 people were killed and 1,634 were seriously injured in these accidents.
These dangerous intersections are now the focus of the Safer Streets Initiative, which involves the collaboration of transportation experts from Link Houston, Bike Houston, and the Federal Highway Administration. The goal of the initiative is to identify and address safety concerns in 12 of Houston's most dangerous intersections for pedestrians.
Pedestrian safety should be a priority for both pedestrians and motorists. When an accident occurs, victims should be aware of their legal rights and options. Call 713-587-9668 to schedule a free consultation with a personal injury attorney in Houston.
