Why You Should Pay Attention To Safe Driving In October

Last year, we published a post detailing the number of traffic fatalities in October during 2014, 2015, and 2016. In each of those years, October was the deadliest month on Texas roads.

As we look back at 2017, there is a similar trend, although two months saw more traffic fatalities than October. July had the most traffic-related fatalities (352) followed by November (346). Let's look at the data from 2017:

  • July: 352 fatalities
  • November: 346 fatalities
  • October: 336 fatalities
  • March: 330 fatalities
  • December: 329 fatalities
  • August: 305 fatalities
  • May: 302 fatalities
  • September: 295 fatalities
  • January: 293 fatalities
  • April: 288 fatalities
  • June: 288 fatalities
  • February: 257 fatalities

The good news is that traffic-related deaths in October are slightly down from previous years:

  • October traffic deaths in 2017: 336
  • October traffic deaths in 2016: 382
  • October traffic deaths in 2015: 359
  • October traffic deaths in 2014: 353

However, it is important to stay vigilant. Hundreds of people die every month on Texas roads. And in recent years, October has seen many of those deaths.

Why is October a dangerous driving month in Texas?

Unfortunately, there is no clear answer. However, there are several October-specific factors that may play a part in this deadly trend:

  • Halloween: Trick-or-treaters add to the prevalence of pedestrian related car accidents on Halloween. Additionally, alcohol consumption by party goers can lead to a greater number of impaired drivers on the roadways.
  • Less daylight: Shorter days mean more time spent driving in limited lighting situations. As the sun rises later and sets earlier, drivers must rely on artificial light during during their morning and evening commutes. Reduced visibility and driver fatigue are a dangerous combination.
  • Deer: October is the height of the deer hunting season and also when the deer population is at its peak. Thus, there are more active deer that can become hazards for drivers. Texas has more deer-related traffic deaths than any other state.

The usual offenders - distracted driving, texting while driving, excessive speeding, and drunk driving,- are also contributing factors to the high number of accidents in October. We are faced with one of the deadliest months on the roadways when these typical contributing factors are combined with the October-specific factors.
