Lawsuit Filed Against Utility Company for Explosions

Earlier this month, more than 80 gas fires and explosions occurred in the Boston area, killing one person and injuring more than two dozen. A family that suffered serious injuries and lost their home in those explosions has filed a lawsuit against Columbia Gas.

Omayra Figueroa was at home with her three children at the time of the explosion. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the Figueroa family for negligence of the utility company. The Figueroa family seeks compensation “for the substantial personal injury and profound pain and suffering.”

After the explosion, Ms. Figueroa climbed over debris until reaching her daughter who could not feel her legs. Her daughter is about to undergo a fourth surgery from the injuries sustained while in the house. Her son was in the driveway when he was crushed by chimney debris and suffered fractures to his pelvis. Her son’s friend, also in the driveway, was killed by the debris.

The explosion and damages were preventable. Before the natural gas explosions, the pressure in the pipelines was 12 times higher than the system was intended to hold.
