California Jury Awards Over $6,000,000 in Wrongful Death Suit

In March of 2016, a pedestrian was struck by a car at the Whittier Uptown Association’s Farmers Market. The driver of the vehicle was a vendor at the market, and she struck the pedestrian while backing out of her parking spot. The death was ruled an accident, but the family of the pedestrian sued both the driver and the Whittier Uptown Association.

The lawsuit was based on the negligence of the driver and the Association’s failure to inform the driver that, according to the Association’s own rules, she was not allowed to drive her vehicle in the area where she struck the pedestrian.

On October 11th, the jury in the case returned a verdict for the plaintiffs in the amount of $6.3 million. The attorney for the plaintiffs said, “It’s a huge symbol of what their loss means, and it gives them closure in dealing with their loss, knowing that the jury recognized the enormity of their loss.”
