Houston Police Officer Charged with DWI while Child in Car

A police officer for the City of Houston has been charged with driving while intoxicated with her young daughter in the car at the time. Cassandra Crosby, who is 36 years old, joined the Houston Police Department in 2008. Crosby, now out on bail, appeared in court on Tuesday, September 11, 2018.

Crosby has been charged with the offense of driving while intoxicated with a child younger than 15 years old in the car. She has been relieved of her duties at HPD pending the outcome of her criminal charges.

Like all of those charged with a crime, Crosby is presumed innocent until proven guilty. She should be afforded all of her constitutional and procedural rights. If she is found guilty after due process of law is observed, Crosby should be suitably punished. The charges, if founded, are particularly disturbing for two reasons: first, that a driver would endanger her daughter by driving her while she is impaired; and second, that this outrageous breaking of the law would be committed by a person whose sworn duty is to enforce the law. Few in our city know better about the senseless and avoidable tragedies caused by driving while intoxicated than police officers. Impaired drivers endanger other motorists, their passengers, and even law enforcement officers themselves while on the roadway. It is just unthinkable that a police officer would imperil her own child, as well as others in our community, by recklessly driving while intoxicated. The criminal justice system must carefully handle this matter, and, if Crosby is convicted, use this as an occasion to demonstrate that no one gets privileged treatment when charged with DWI, especially a police officer who knows better.
