Fatal Collision on Freeway

Once again, a crash on the freeway has led to a death. And, once again, alcohol appears to have played a part.

The wreck occurred over the weekend, and an arrest was made on early Saturday morning, August 11, 2018.

Law enforcement investigation indicates that two vehicles were racing in the eastbound lanes of I-10 at about the Westmont exit. One of the cars appears to have clipped the rear portion of the other. This caused that vehicle to lose control, spin, and go airborne. It came to rest on the grass in an area next to the freeway. The driver of that vehicle was killed. The other driver did not get hurt. But, police report that he was intoxicated, and charges are pending.

In addition, while police were investigating, drivers of two other vehicles attempted to go through the crime scene. They were stopped, and it turns out that each exhibited clues of intoxication, and each was arrested.

This case presents a grim reminder of the serious hazards involved in highway driving. And, even more importantly, it shows the vast elevation of the risks when alcohol and racing are involved. There exists no justification for using public highways for racing-private tracks are available for those who wish to race. Even more, this crash further exemplifies the unnecessary dangers incident upon driving while intoxicated. Here, that may have caused the death of one driver. Further, the police officers working the collision could easily have been injured or killed if the two other intoxicated drivers had hit some of the wreckage or investigators at the scene.

The criminal justice system will now be called upon to address those who have violated the law, if that is demonstrated according to proper procedure. The community may then be called upon to mete out justice-if so, a message must be sent to all users of our public roadways that we will not tolerate either racing or driving while intoxicated, and certainly not both. Finally, the civil justice system may also be called upon to evaluate the damages caused by any lawbreaker.
