Trucking Companies Are Pushing For Bigger, Longer Trucks

Semi-truck-tractor-trailer.jpg

The biggest vehicles on our roads and highways are 18-wheeler trucks.

It's hard to imagine these trucks any larger than they already are, but that is exactly what the Safer Hauling & Infrastructure Protection coalition is pushing.

They argue that it's time to modernize trucking. Current weight limits were set in 1982. So many advancements have been made in truck safety and technology, in addition to better pavement on roads, that current laws and regulations are outdated.

The group is comprised of members of the agriculture, manufacturing, food and beverage, and other industries.

What are their goals?

The coalition is pushing to have standard trailer lengths increased from 28 feet to 33 feet. Currently, the weight limit for trucks is 80,000 pounds. They are pushing for that limit to be raised to 91,000 pounds.

The coalition argues that bigger trucks are actually safer. Having fewer, larger trucks on the road would minimize congestion and reduce fuel usage. Additionally, reduced infrastructure cost would help save taxpayers money.

However, not everyone is in favor of bigger, longer trucks.

The Coalition Against Bigger Trucks is a grassroots coalition that advocates for highway safety. The group has support from the National Sheriffs' Association, National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, the AAA, and many other organizations.

Their concern is that longer, heavier trucks could put motorists at increased risk. Heavier trucks require longer stopping distances. Since the center of gravity is higher on a heavier truck, they are more prone to rollovers. Additionally, many bridges in the United States are in poor condition. Heavier trucks would take more of a toll on these structurally deficient stretches of road.

What do you think? Should trucks be bigger - or remain the same size? Do you think larger trucks pose an increased safety risk? Please share your thoughts in the comments section, below.
