Oil Tank Explosion Injures Two Workers in Texas

On October 17, 2017, two oilfield workers were injured at an oilfield near Dilley, Texas. La Salle County Sheriff’s Office reported that the oilfield workers were injured after an oil storage exploded at the site, which is operated by Carrizo Oil and Gas.

When first responders arrived at the site near 10:45 a.m., they found several oil storage tanks surrounded by flames. The fire was so large that smoke plumes were reportedly observed from Cotulla, which is approximately 16 miles away. Firefighters surrounded the site to extinguish the fire and prevent its spread to other areas.

The two injured workers were flown to San Antonio for treatment but the status of the severity of their injuries remains unknown. The Sherriff’s Office noted that oilfield workers are often transported by air for faster travel; therefore, airlifted injured workers don’t necessarily have more severe injuries.

The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office reported that the fire was ignited by an oil tank battery but the cause is being investigated.
