Halloween Safety: The Smartphone Solution

Halloween should be a safe and enjoyable experience for all children.

While kids are focused on having fun, parents are often focused on safety. When kids start trick-or-treating on their own, parents may be looking for ways to keep track of their whereabouts and ensure their safety.

Luckily, there are some smartphone apps and tools that help do just that – on one of the busiest pedestrian traffic nights of the year:

  • Tracking apps: Both iPhone and Android have options to track the location of a phone. On iPhone, use the “Find My iPhone” feature. On Android, use the “Find My Device” feature.
  • Texting and messaging: Texting or messaging apps like Facebook Messenger make it easy for parents to stay in touch with kids while trick-or-treating.
  • Flashlight: Considering that a lot of trick-or-treating takes place after dark, a flashlight device on a smartphone can be very convenient. Encourage your child to use the flashlight in unlit areas to avoid tripping, falling, etc.
  • Calling 911:Children should of course be taught to call 911 immediately in the event of an emergency.

If your child will be carrying a phone while trick-or-treating, make sure he or she stores it in a safe and secure location – inside a zipped pocket, for example. Make sure the phone’s volume is turned up so your child can hear any messages or calls coming in. Also, make sure the phone is fully charged–the phone’s battery drains more quickly when it is on the move, and flashlights and tracking apps can also use a lot of energy.

A smartphone can add an extra layer of protection – and peace of mind – when your child is out-and-about on Halloween.
