Police Investigating Possible Use of Alcohol in Deadly Crash

A deadly motor vehicle collision occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, and police are investigating to determine if alcohol was involved.

The wreck occurred shortly after closing time, at about 2:15 a.m. An automobile was heading north on the service road of the Hardy Toll Road. At the intersection of Little York, it was turning right to head east. At that time, a truck heading east on Little York smashed into the automobile. Early reports indicate that the truck may have run a red light.

The driver of the automobile was injured and rushed to the hospital in serious condition. The truck had four people in it. Three were transported to the hospital in serious condition, and one was killed.

Police are investigating to determine if alcohol played a role in causing the fatal collision.

The dangerous effects of alcohol on motorists is common knowledge by now. Yet, some drivers continue to get behind the wheel after they have had too much to drink. The heighted risk they impose on others using our public roadways is simply unacceptable. The criminal justice system must continue to apprehend and discipline violators to the extent required by justice. And the civil justice system should ensure that those damaged by such reckless conduct are fully compensated, and, when appropriate, punitive damages should be imposed as a punishment to drunk drivers and as a warning to others that this community will no longer tolerate senseless injuries and deaths due to driving while intoxicated.
