How To Protect Yourself Against Distracted Drivers

Distracted-driving.jpg

You probably consider yourself a safe driver: You obey traffic laws, you avoid excessive speeding, and try to keep your eyes on the road at all times.

But even the safest driver has no control over the actions of others. This is especially problematic when considering how widespread and dangerous distracted driving is.

What are some ways to keep yourself safe from all of the distracted drivers on the road? Here are some practical tips to implement immediately:

  • Practice defensive driving: Defensive driving is the practice of identifying potential hazards while driving and taking action to avoid them. By anticipating dangerous driving situations, you can do more to avoid potential crashes. Defensive driving includes:
    • Assuming that all drivers will run red lights and stop signs, fail to signal, etc., – and reacting appropriately;
    • Keeping a safe distance between your car and the car in front of you;
    • Checking your side and rearview mirrors frequently; and
    • Anticipating the actions of other nearby drivers and driving to avoid potential collisions.
  • Take a zero-tolerance approach to distracted driving: Enforce a zero-tolerance approach to using a cell phone while driving. Put your phone away to avoid temptation to check it at stoplights or stop signs; put it in your bag or in the glove compartment to minimize the temptation to reach for your phone.
  • Spread the word: Talk to your friends and family members about their distracted driving habits. Encourage them to put down their phones and minimize other distractions while driving. We all play a part in keeping our roads safe.

Set high expectations for yourself and your family members. Encourage your loved ones to practice safe driving habits. The more each individual does to drive safely, the safer our roads will be for all drivers and passengers.
