Two Fatalities in the News

Two fatal motor vehicle collisions are in yesterday's news. And one of them involves another hit-and-run.

The hit-and-run occurred in the early morning hours of November 13, 2016. It happened in northwest Harris County, near 28700 FM 2920, at about 1:30 a.m. The victim was a pedestrian named Steven Jones. He was walking in the eastbound lane when he was hit, after which the driver sped away. Officials are requesting the public to help identify the vehicle that struck Mr. Jones, which may have been a late model Cadillac Escalade. The vehicle might have suffered damage to its front due to the impact. Authorities ask anyone with knowledge to contact Crime Stoppers.

The second fatality occurred over the Thanksgiving weekend. While many families were enjoying turkey, football, and their loved ones, the friends and relatives of Michael Taylor received the dreaded news that he had been killed. The crash occurred on Saturday night at about 9:15 p.m. A Silverado pickup truck that was going north on West Montgomery attempted to turn left onto West Mount Houston. When doing so, the pickup went in front of Mr. Taylor's Ford Crown Victoria that was heading southbound. Reportedly, the angle of the collision was almost head-on. The driver of the pickup was not injured even though Mr. Taylor was killed instantly. Sheriff's deputies are still investigating the evidence of the wreck to determine whether either vehicle ran a red light. In the meantime, those who knew and loved Mr. Taylor are mourning his death.

These incidents highlight a couple of trends. As has occurred several times this year, many drivers wrongly speed away after a serious wreck. That is a crime and violators must be brought to justice. Also, the second crash reminds motorists of the hazards of intersections and how suddenly a life can be lost. It is simply critical that drivers make sure that a turn at an intersection can be safely completed before beginning one. The safety of all who use the public roadways depends upon it.
