Another Deadly Hit-and-Run

Houston has suffered another in a rash of hit-and-run collisions.

A couple of weeks ago, a man was killed while crossing the street in the Montrose area. The driver sped away in a dark colored-vehicle. The following week, a car was stopped at the Canadian border. It was thought to be the same driver, but the charges were later dropped.

This past weekend, an 11-year-old girl was killed in a hit-and-run collision. It happened on Saturday at about 6:20 p.m. A red vehicle crashed into the rear driver side of a Toyota Tundra. The wreck happened in the 6100 block of Westpark, at the service road for the Southwest Freeway. Afterwards, the red vehicle fled the scene, while some who were in the Tundra were transported to the hospital. The 11-year-old girl was pronounced dead at Texas Children's Hospital.

Later the same evening, a female pedestrian was killed in still another hit-and-run crash. It happened at about 10:00 p.m. The lady was pushing a shopping cart across Bellaire Boulevard at Ranchester. She was rushed to the hospital where she died.

These tragedies demonstrate the wisdom of the laws requiring drivers to stop after a collision. If there is property damage but no injury, drivers must stop and exchange information. When an injury occurs, drivers must stop and render aid. Hit-and-run drivers pose a serious hazard to all citizens using the streets. Hopefully, the drivers causing these fatalities will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent required by justice. Our community must send a message that, when a collision occurs, drivers must stop. There must be no incentive to flee the scene of a collision.
