School Bus Accidents: Not an Uncommon Occurrence

Accidents involving school buses in and around Houston are not an uncommon occurrence. This unfortunate truth was evident on Monday, April 13th. Shortly after school let out, two HISD school buses carrying children from Elmore Elementary and Burris Elementary in Houston collided. The accident occurred on a narrow, two-lane road. The impact caused one bus to be pushed into a ditch. Thirteen children and one bus driver were transported to the hospital.

Also on that Monday, an Aldine ISD school bus was involved in an accident near the intersection of Aldine Bender and Imperial Valley. Fortunately, no children were on the bus at that time. The crash was part of a chain reaction accident that began when a driver, who police believe may have been intoxicated, ran a red light and smashed into a white station wagon being driven by Huego Avila. Sadly, Avila died instantly. The driver who ran the red light fled the scene on foot, but was later apprehended and is now in custody.

The two crashes involving school buses on that Monday are not the only recent accidents of this kind. For example, in August, a school bus driver for a private bus company was involved in a crash that injured more than a dozen middle school students. It was later discovered that the bus driver did not have a license to operate the vehicle. Yet another accident occurred last month, when a Cleveland ISD bus carrying Junior ROTC students was involved in an accident with an 18 wheeler. Eighteen of the high school students onboard suffered minor injuries.

The inherent risks of our roadways are magnified when they directly endanger children. And when children are injured by the negligence of drivers, financial recovery may be available. If your child was injured as the result of a negligent driver, contact an attorney at Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Friend by calling 713-396-3964 or toll free at 1-800-594-4884.
