Alcohol use is suspected in a wreck that killed one and injured seven on Sunday. At about 10:30 p.m., a motorist driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer on FM 3083 allegedly drove off of the main portion of the road and onto the shoulder; in response, the driver then apparently suddenly corrected and veered leftwards, into oncoming traffic. He hit a Toyota head on.
The driver of the Trailblazer was killed. Authorities believe alcohol consumption by that driver may have been a factor. The Toyota was being operated by a mother who had picked up her two teenagers from their jobs at a Conroe restaurant; they were headed back to their house when the crash occurred. One of the teenagers had recently graduated from high school, while the other was reportedly a high school student. The students and their mother were taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. The remaining people who were injured were passengers in the Trailblazer. Their injuries were described as “serious.”
This terrible crash is simply the latest in our community that appears to be alcohol-related. It is time for this to stop. Drivers must simply refuse to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle when they have been drinking-a taxicab is much cheaper than a DWI or, worse, a collision. Passengers must also refuse to ride with an impaired driver. Finally, law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, judges, and juries must say “enough” by imposing the full force of the law for these violators. If a person wants to go out for an evening of drinking, he must not impose the risk of driving while intoxicated upon others and himself afterwards.
