Three Crashes are in the News

This week begins with three wrecks for drivers to consider.

First, at the time of this writing, inbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway near Clear Lake have been shut down due to a crash involving a big truck. Details have not yet been released.

More seriously, a local motorcyclist was killed last night in a collision that occurred near the 5700 block of Yale at Patrick. A GMC van reportedly stopped at the intersection, and then pulled out; according to police, the driver failed to yield the right-of-way. An operator of a black Suzuki motorcycle slammed into the side of the van, killing the operator. Some accounts indicate that the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed. In any event, today his family and loved ones are mourning his death. The van driver was treated for injuries that are reported to be less serious.

The final incident caused another fatality. The wreck included former Olympic champion Bruce Jenner. On Saturday, Jenner was in one of four vehicles that crashed on the Pacific Coast Highway in Los Angeles. One woman was killed, and seven others were injured in the collision.

Jenner's Cadillac rear-ended a white Lexus which hit a Toyota Prius. The Lexus went left, and hit a black Hummer head-on, killing the woman who was driving the Lexus. Police are investigating whether texting or alcohol played a role in the incident.

These three wrecks underscore the serious issues presented by motor vehicles. Most adults drive, and most do so every day. So, it becomes "second nature" to many, and it is easy to focus on other issues in life while driving. But, we must bear in mind the tremendous safety concerns that a mistake-even a momentary one-can create. Traffic is snarled, cars are totaled, while people can be injured and killed. Driving demands our attention.
