Keurig Recalls Over 7 Million Brewing Systems After Users Report Burns

Keurig Green Mountain announced a recall of more than 7.3 million of its single-serve coffee brewers after receiving numerous reports that the systems sprayed hot liquids onto the user and caused burns.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Keurig, which is known for manufacturing single-serve coffee brewers, received around 200 consumer reports stating that hot liquid escaped from the coffee maker as it was brewing. In some cases, the hot liquid was projected from the machine and onto the user. Of the 200 reports detailing this occurrence, 90 reported that the user suffered burn-related injuries. The liquid sprayed onto the users was also hotter than the average cup of coffee because the defective coffee machines reportedly overheated the water during the brewing process.

Following the recall, Keurig's website noted that the hot liquid is more likely to spew from the brewing system if the user attempts to make more than two cups in quick succession. The company's website also warned users to stand at arms-length from the machine during the brewing process.

The brewing systems being recalled are Keurig's Mini Brewing System, model K10, which was formerly identified as model B31. The K10 and B31 models include a serial number beginning with the number 31. These systems were sold online and in department stores around the country from December, 2009 to December, 2014.
