Harris County Roadways Account for More Deaths than Any Other Texas County in 2014

According to a recent report by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Harris County roadways accounted for 394 roadway fatalities in 2014, with 169 believed to be alcohol related. Both of those numbers outpaced all other Texas counties by a wide margin. By comparison, roadways in Dallas County, with 2.4 million residents, saw 223 total fatalities with 71 believed to be related to alcohol.

The high number of fatalities in Harris County can be attributed to a number of factors, including the county's large population of 4.3 million residents. Given the large number of commuters who work and live in and around Houston, it is not difficult to imagine how Harris County's crowded roadways have seen more than 150 more fatal accidents than any other county in the state.

However, while it may not be a shock that Harris County, the state's largest county in terms of population, outpaced the rest of the state in fatality car crashes, the vast majority of Texas counties experienced a decrease in the total number of fatalities. In fact, of the 10 largest counties, only Harris County experienced an increase in total roadway fatalities, going up from 372 in 2013 to 394 in 2014, an increase of nearly 6%.
