Babies from Mexico May Have Been Exposed to TB at an El Paso Hospital

The general director of the Juárez Health Department, Dr. Hugo Staines Orozco, said the state health department notified the Mexican government that 86 babies may have been exposed to a tuberculosis infected patient care technician who worked with the newborns at Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso. Initially, Providence reported that 27 of more than 850 babies possibly exposed during that time were from Mexico. Of the Mexican infants identified, 45 are from Juárez. Another 24 infants are from Chihuahua City and the remainder are from 13 other Mexican cities.

Armando Saldívar, spokesman for the El Paso Department of Public Health, said they have not concluded their investigation to say exactly how many babies from Mexico were delivered and exposed at Providence. As of October, 15 children from Juárez have made an appointment with the El Paso Department of Health to be tested. Five of those babies have completed the screenings. Three of the infants who were screened tested positive for latent tuberculosis, but that might have been a false reading because of past vaccinations. All of the children who test positive for active or latent tuberculosis are going to be monitored and checked each month for at least six months at the Juárez Children's Hospital.

When someone is injured or dies due to a health care provider's negligence, financial recovery may be available. Such recovery is particularly important when permanent, life changing injuries are incurred. It is important to contact someone who understands the intricacies of the party's right to recover.

Medical malpractice is a difficult area of law as it requires an understanding of both the legal practice and the mechanics of medicine. Abraham Watkins offers a free consultation to anyone wishing to pursue such claims.
