Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas Foundation Celebrates Its Ninth Annual Scholarship Luncheon

As many lawyers know, law school can be not only demanding of one's time and energy, but also on one's bank account. Fortunately, the Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas Foundation (MABATx Foundation) hosted its Ninth Annual Scholarship Luncheon benefitting Hispanic scholarships for law students. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding law students who best exemplify leadership, commitment, justice and equality within the Hispanic community and beyond. Scholarships are awarded to law students from each of the three Houston-based law schools.

The Ninth Annual Luncheon included a keynote address from Judge Denise Collins, who shared stories from her impressive career on the bench. As with every year, the Luncheon is an opportunity to honor people in the community that exemplify the goals and ideals of the Foundation. This year the honorees included: Daniel Velasco of the Houston Texans (Pioneer in the Media Industry), Michael and David Cordua of Cordua Restaurants (Pioneers as Entrepreneurs), Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Division for their work on the First 48 (Outstanding Service in the Community as a Public Servants) and Justice Elsa Alcala (Outstanding Service as Justice on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals).

I want to thank all of our distinguished honorees for their continued contributions to the community. Every year, I am always amazed about how inter-connected our award winners are. Though they dedicate themselves to different fields professionally, the honorees all share common goals of stressing the importance of education, serving the community with integrity, and exemplifying leadership. The honorees are a special group of individuals and I wanted to take the opportunity to thank them all once again for their work in the community.
