May 16, 2014, A Tragic Day for Houston Cyclists

Many of us have experienced just how thrilling and addicting it can be to feel the freedom of riding your bike on the blacktop road or a rocky trail. No matter what terrain you chose to ride on, cyclists all share in the experience of the outdoors and open road together. Tragically we lost yet another member of the cycling community. The Daily News, a Galveston newspaper, reported that Jon Trevelise passed away after a long battle with injuries he sustained after being stuck by a motor vehicle.

On April 19, 2014, the day before Easter, Jon Trevelise was struck from behind by a woman allegedly driving on the shoulder of the road while looking for an address. The impact from the vehicle caused Jon's head to slam into the pavement. Even though John was wearing a helmet, the impact was so intense that doctors had to remove parts of his skull to reduce the swelling. John was given a 50% chance of survival. Heartbreakingly, on May 16, 2014, John Trevelise passed away from his injuries.

Perhaps even more alarming is the fact that John Trevelise is not the only bicyclist to lose his life two weeks ago due to Houston's dangerous roads. On May 16, 2014, the same day John Trevelise passed away, off duty Houston Fire Fighter Captain W. Mark Braswell, suffered severe injuries when the bicycle he was riding hit a truck trailer being used to hall landscaping equipment. Braswell was emergency lifted by a Life Flight helicopter to Memorial Hospital. Shortly after arrival he was pronounced dead. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Jon Trevelise and Captain W. Mark Braswell.
