Fatal Crash Reportedly Caused by Drunk Driver

There is a family in our community who is now mourning the needless death of a woman and injury to a girl.

At about 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, a 52-year old woman was killed and an 8-year old girl was sent to Texas Children's Hospital for treatment. The Monte Carlo in which they were traveling on Kingwood Drive was struck hard from behind, forcing them off of the road and into a fixed object. They were hit by Kenneth Johnson, age 22. He was seen driving fast and weaving in and out of traffic, according to reports. Today, he was charged with intoxicated manslaughter.

The harm caused by this thoughtless and dangerous act (if driving while intoxicated is proven to be the cause) is incalculable. Instead of making arrangements for an alternative means of transportation, such as a cab, a designated driver, or a friend, it appears from new accounts that chances were taken. Now, a loved one has been ripped from her family and friends. A little girl's childhood has been scarred. And the driver himself faces the cost and stress of criminal charges. Instead of enjoying a weekend with his pals, he is confronted with the prospect of going to the penitentiary for years.

We must send a message in our county that, when it comes to alcohol, chances most definitely should not be taken. If the evidence demonstrates that Kenneth Johnson drove while intoxicated and caused this fatal collision, we must make sure that anyone who might consider driving after drinking is put on the notice that this is not acceptable, and that it will entail severe consequences. The lives at stake are those of the person who drinks, as well as all others using the public roadways.
