Holiday travel can take a toll

Now that the holiday season is upon us, there will be even more traffic on the roads. Because so many people will be traveling to visit relatives or purchase gifts for loved ones, it is important that all drivers take the necessary precautions while on the roadways. Unfortunately, the holidays for several families in the local area will be painful, due to a car accident that killed one person and critically injured two others.

An accident in Denton on Nov. 29 claimed the life of a 71-year-old Texas woman. The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 380. Not many details are available, but it was a head-on collision between the SUV the woman was driving and a white pickup truck with a couple from Georgia. The accident resulted in the highways being closed in both directions for several hours.

The woman had to be pulled from the wreckage of her SUV. She was transported to a local hospital but died from her injuries. The truck caught fire, prompting the couple's rescue from their vehicle as well. The man was taken to a hospital in Plano, where he is listed in critical but stable condition. His wife was transported to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Law enforcement has stated that, with the increase in traffic, it's a sad reality that accidents such as this one will occur. They advise everyone travelling by car to wear a seatbelt, including those in the passenger and back seats. Also, people should stay within the legal speed limits and adjust their driving for road conditions.

Those injured in accidents that are caused by someone else have the right to seek compensation for their medical expenses and property losses. A legal professional experienced in these types of situations can explain what rights a victim has and help a person decide if seeking damages is a wise choice.
