Ford and Toyota Announce Extensive Recalls

According to CCN Money, Toyota recently announced two recalls involving 369,000 vehicles to fix problems associated with its Highlander Hybrid SUVs and Lexus IS 350 models. No accidents or injuries have been reported as a consequence of the faults, but in those Hybrid SUVs recalled, the hybrid system can overheat, triggering a warning, and in some cases causing the vehicle to stop unexpectedly. The recall involving Lexus vehicles has also been found to unexpectedly stop the vehicle, due to loose bolts in the valve timing device.

Similarly, Ford has also announced a recall of 355,000 vehicles encompassing the Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car, as reported by Medical Daily. The recall is due to a severe corrosion in the steering column resulting in steering shaft issues. As with the Toyota recall, no accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the issue.

With these large recalls by Toyota and Ford, it seems that this is a growing issue. In 2013, the largest recalls affecting the U.S. market have been issued by Chrysler, Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, Subaru, and BMW, according to Cars.com. In 2012, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalled nearly 18 million vehicles; in 2011, it recalled 15.5 million.
