Water Sports Safety

If you have stepped outside lately, you probably noticed that summertime has arrived. For many, this means that more time will be spent in, on, or near the waters with family and friends. This also means that there will be more of a risk of injury. Boats, jet skis, and other watersport devices can be quite hazardous if used improperly. In fact, jet skis were associated with 764 injuries and 44 deaths in 2011; deaths and injuries that likely could have been avoided by following the rules, keeping a safe operating distance/speed, and keeping a proper lookout.

There are other general tips for having a safe summer on the waters. First and foremost, when operating or riding any boat or motorized device, wear a lifejacket! Even if you are a great swimmer, a variety of things can render you incapacitated, thus likely to drown without immediate help. A lifejacket would buy you time until help arrives. Also, bring others with you as you go on your trips to the waters. This tip is mainly for safety reasons, but it also provides more fun for your day. Finally, be prepared; this includes bringing items that would help in times of emergency, such as life jackets/vests or other flotation devices, a boat radio, a mobile phone, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, and a horn or whistle. Plan your day and activities in advance, so if anyone objects or has problems with any activity, re-planning may take place accordingly.
