Drilling Rig Collapse Kills a West Texas Oilfield Worker

On June 21, 2013, a 40-year-old West Texas oilfield worker was killed when part of a drilling rig collapsed. Investigators said the victim was dead at the scene near Big Spring, Texas.

Sadly, drilling rig accidents like this one happen far too often in Texas

Earlier this year in Culberson County, Texas a 22-year-old man was killed in an oil rig accident when a steel casing pipe came off a chain and pinned the man to the rig. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Workers in the oil and gas industry are subjected to incredibly dangerous industrial conditions, which frequently result in serious injuries and fatalities.

According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the severity of injuries sustained by oil and gas workers on the job is far worse than those suffered by workers in other industries. On average, recovery times are twice as long for oilfield or drilling rig workers.

Oil and gas accidents typically include the following:

  • Carelessness or recklessness
  • Faulty equipment
  • Inadequate personnel training
  • Failing to communicate
  • Outdated or nonexistent safety procedures

Oil and gas accidents can also involve explosions, pipeline mishaps, safety violations, and other incidents, including:

  • Drilling accidents
  • Defective maintenance
  • Improper construction
  • Pipeline transportation accidents
  • Storage problems
