East Texas School Bus Crash Fatal For Driver Of Other Vehicle

The driver of a Toyota Camry was killed in a fatal bus accident when he drifted across the center line and collided with a Wills Point Independent School District school bus. Three students as well as the school bus driver were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Investigators report that both the bus driver and the Camry attempted defensive maneuvers, but were unsuccessful. A third vehicle was also involved in the fatal bus crash.

Dangers Of School Bus Accidents, According To The NHTSA

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), 19 school children are killed, on average each year in fatal bus accidents. The most dangerous time of the day for school-age children is during the after-school dropoff period between 2 and 5 p.m. During that timeframe, children between the ages of 5 and 7 are most likely to be involved in a fatal bus accident.

In addition to students riding the bus or school-age children who are killed while walking near a school bus, over 1,000 drivers of other vehicles were killed in a collision with a school bus between 1998 and 2008.

More than half of school bus crashes are head-on collisions or otherwise involve impact to the front end of the school bus, according to the NHTSA.
