Red Light Crash On Texas 3 Kills Young Houston Woman

Two drivers were making protected left turns in opposite directions when a the driver of a tan GMC envoy ran a red light and caused a three-vehicle crash. The multi-car collision took place at the intersection of Edgebrook and Texas 3 (Old Galveston Road).

The driver of the Yukon first hit the Honda Civic as the driver was turning on a green arrow. The force of the first collision pushed the Civic into an Isuzu Trooper who also had a green arrow. Passengers in both the Civic and the Trooper bore the brunt of the collision; the passenger in the Civic, a 22-year-old woman was fatally injured and the passenger in the Trooper was taken to the hospital for examination.

The National Safety Council conducted a five-year study of fatal crashes throughout the United States that occurred at stop-light controlled intersections revealed a downturn in the number of fatal crashes in recent years. The number of people injured in intersection crashes remained relatively steady over the same period.

Intersection crashes account for about six percent of all fatal crashes in Texas. The most common of these intersection crashes involve right-angle collisions as with the recent Houston three-car crash. Sideswipe crashes and rear-end crashes are also intersection crash types that are likely to cause serious or fatal injuries.
